“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” Psalm 95:6

A question arose in my mind: What is true worship?

Is attending a Sunday service or attending other church meetings the only form of worship? As I meditated on the Word of God, the Lord made me realise that while gathering together as believers and participating in church services are important, true worship is much more than what we do during our gatherings.

Every day, we need to experience the presence of God and maintain fellowship with Him. People may see our outward expressions of worship, but God looks at what is happening inside our hearts. He sees whether our worship is genuine and whether we are worshipping Him wholeheartedly.

As we read in Acts 16:13–15 about Lydia, who was the first convert to Christianity in Europe. She was a successful businesswoman and a dealer in purple cloth. Although she was a woman of business and status, she was also a worshipper of God. When Paul shared the message, the Lord opened her heart, and she humbly responded to the message and was baptised.

Lydia reminds us that true worship begins with a heart that is open to God.

Scripture teaches us that worship involves offering ourselves to God as a living sacrifice. It is a life of surrender—submitting ourselves humbly to God, trusting Him, and pouring out our hearts before Him every day.

How would we feel if our children showed love towards us only once a week? As parents, we might begin to wonder whether they truly love us. In the same way, as children of God, we should continually express our love towards our Heavenly Father through our lives and through our worship.

Our God is worthy to be praised at all times.

He is Yahweh, the great “I AM”; Jehovah Rapha, our Healer; Elohim, our Mighty Creator; El Shaddai, the Almighty God; Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides; Adonai, our Lord and Master; and El Roi, the God who sees us.

He is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent— the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

God loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son for us. Jesus gave His life on the cross to save us from our sins.

When we recognise who God is and what He has done for us, our hearts should naturally respond with thanksgiving and praise.

David expresses this beautifully in Psalm 139:14:

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Worship is more than singing songs or using musical instruments during a church service. It is expressed through thanksgiving, praise, faith, obedience to God and by living as ambassadors of Christ. It is choosing to honour God not only with our lips, but with our thoughts, decisions and actions. As we read in Mark 5:34 about a woman who was healed by touching the hem of Jesus’ garment. Jesus lovingly called her daughter and said your faith has healed you. Faith is an active expression of worship.

Serving as an Act of Worship

True worship is not limited to singing songs or praying on a Sunday morning. Every action done with a grateful and willing heart can honour God.

Serving others is also an important expression of worship. Serving means using our time, skills and talents to help others and to build up the church community. The skills and talents we have are gifts from God, given to us through His mercy and grace.

God has given each one of us different gifts and abilities. Whether we teach, play music, help with cleaning, greet people, give generously, encourage someone, or quietly help with a task that may go unnoticed, every act of service can honour God when it is done with a grateful and willing heart.

Even humble tasks, such as cleaning the church or giving our time to help someone, should never be considered insignificant. When they are done for God and with the right heart, they become meaningful acts of worship and service to Him.

Jesus Himself taught us that greatness in God’s kingdom is found in serving others. Therefore, whatever our role may be, we should serve faithfully not for recognition or appreciation from people, but because we are serving the Lord.

A few lines from a song touched my heart:

“If the Highest place I reach is At Your Feet, then I have done it all.”

These words beautifully express the heart of true worship. The greatest place we can reach is not a position of honour, recognition or achievement, but the feet of Jesus—in humility, surrender and reverence.

We all know the story of Mary and Martha. When Jesus visited their home, Mary sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what He said. She chose to spend her valuable time in the presence of Jesus.

This makes me ask myself: How many of us are willing to spend time at the feet of Jesus, quietly listening to what God wants to speak into our lives?

We should also be careful about whom and what we are listening to.

In Genesis, we see that God had fellowship with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They enjoyed the presence of God and the closeness of that relationship. But sin entered, and that fellowship was broken.

This reminds us how precious our fellowship with God truly is. We should never allow the enemy to rob us of the peace and joy we experience in God’s presence.

When negative thoughts come into our minds, we need to renew our minds through the Word of God and turn our hearts towards Him, because He is Holy and worthy to be praised.

Life may bring hardships, brokenness and trials, but wholehearted worship helps us keep our eyes on our Abba Father rather than on our circumstances.

When we humbly worship our God in Spirit and in truth, with a clear conscience and a surrendered heart, we become more aware of His presence and allow Him to work in our lives.

May our worship not be limited to Sundays or other church meetings.

May our homes, workplaces, relationships, thoughts and daily choices become acts of worship.

Jesus said:

“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks.” John 4:23

God is looking for true worshippers whose worship comes from a sincere and surrendered heart.

True worship is not just something we do—it is a life we live for Him. May our whole life be an offering of worship to God.

May our worship be genuine.

May our hearts remain surrendered.

May our lives bring glory to His name.

Let God’s Name be Glorified!
