Article: IS WALK WORTHY? | Gladys Biju George

As per the laws and customs of the world there are different types of walk. Usually it may be based on either religious or secular aspects. Lets have a look from the beginning. Small children try to imitate the steps, words and actions of their parents to a certain age or extent. And once they have begun to be grownups they just start quiting the former and desire to walk like any role models whom they admire the most, whom they choose. This may keep on changing. While some may get addicted too. Apostle Paul says, I, therefore the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called. (Eph:4 :1). Here it clearly portrays about the worth and value of the calling that we have received.

What does this calling include?

When it mentions to walk worthy of the calling it means, that this calling has some special significance. And while writing the epistle Paul wants that the church in Ephesus should not be unaware of this hidden purpose. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;(Eph:4 :4). This was the greatest treasure i.e hope of eternal life which was included in the plan of God ordained before the foundation of the world. And due to this even after mankind got mingled with sin God’s love didn’t leave him thereby giving an opportunity to become a partaker of the heavenly fellowship. Isn’t this a great calling? Living according to world’s rules and regulations may give us temporary happiness while a ‘walk worthy of the calling’ may not initially provide that. But it definitely leads us to eternal life. We need to sacrifice many things. Jesus said, And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.(Matt:10:38,39)

How should our walk be?

Our walk should be:
With all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love(Eph:4 :2)
Walk in love, as Christ also has loved us(Eph:5 :2)
Walk as children of light(Eph:5 :8)
Walk circumspectly, as wise(Eph:5 :15)
Created in Christ Jesus for good works, should walk in them (Eph:2:10)
Walk worthy of God(Eph:2: 12)
Walk properly to those who are outside(1 Thess:4: 12)
Walk properly, as in the day(Rom:13: 13)

What kind of walk should a believer avoid?

Our walk should not be:
As the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind(Eph:4: 17)
Should not walk as fools(Eph:5:15)
Not in revelry and drunkeness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy(Rom:13: 13)

Paul always prayed that God would count them(Thessalonians) worthy of this calling and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power(2 Thess:1: 11). Apostle Peter says, Therefore, brethren, be ever more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble. When the disciples asked Jesus about the sign of his coming and end of age, he said that false christs and false prophets will rise and show signs and wonders to deceive, if possible even the elect. So let us be more careful and walk worthy of our calling by considering it as the greatest previledge obtained in this short life. May Almighty God help each of us to stand in his presence without stumbling. God bless all.
