Article: Become like our Master | Simjan Cheeran, USA

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.” Luke 6:40
Once a young boy was brought before Alexander the Great for stealing a horse. Alexander saw how young he was and heard his story and decided he would go easy on him. Getting ready to release him, Alexander asked the young boy, “What is your name?” He replied, “Alexander, sir.” Alexander the Great was furious and asked him again, “What is your name?” The boy, this time with fear in his voice said, “Alexander, sir.” In anger, Alexander the Great threw the boy to the ground, pointed at him and said, “Boy, change your conduct, or change your name.”
Carrying the name of Christ and not having his character is a shame to the master. The ultimate goal of a disciple is to become like his master. Discipleship from a biblical perspective is not merely a transfer of “head knowledge” from the instructor to the student; rather, the disciple is to emulate his master and teacher in every aspect of life until he becomes just like the master. In the same way we must become just like our master, Jesus Christ. In Phil 2:5, Paul is instructing the Philippians to ’have the same mindset as Christ Jesus’.
Let us take a closer look at some of the qualities that characterised this great man and see how we can benefit from his example.
● He was morally upright – Several religious leaders and gurus of the current time failed to prove their character. But Jesus was blameless to an extent even his enemies couldn’t find any fault in him.
● He was a perfect example of patience, kindness, and compassion.
● He was the epitome of humility, to the extent of washing his disciples’ feet.
● He maintained love and forgiveness- Jesus claimed that there is no greater love than to die for one of your friends—and He did just that. If anyone doubts His love, all they have to do is look upon the cross and see the agony that He bore for their sake. He did not retaliate against his enemies; instead, he forgave them.
Knowing that Jesus’ life was perfect in regard to putting His father first, a disciple should look at the way He lived His life and imitate Him, attempting to “walk the way He walked”. The world doesn’t need more role models, it needs more of Jesus—the ultimate role model. People will not find a better person to emulate positive character traits from than Jesus Christ himself.
Let’s carefully imitate our master in all our steps.
A quote from Evg Billy Graham goes like this…”Being a Christian is more than just an instantaneous conversion – it is a daily process whereby you grow to be more and more like Christ.”
Passage for further meditation: Romans 8:1-29
Verse to Memorise: Romans 8:29
Prayer: Lord, please help to know you more and more so that I may become increasingly intimate with You. Let me enjoy the closest relationship with You, as I press on to the highest calling of becoming just like You Lord, Amen.
