Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit

This miracle of driving out the unclean spirit is special because of three reasons: Time, Place and Person.
Time: Sabbath being a holy restful day of the week ordained by God, the Jewish tradition did not allow to do any work, rather they believed it was sinful to bearing burdens/ helping others/ heal as it was redefined to more of a ritual than doing good.
Place: Synagogue, the Jewish place of worship where psalms and hymns are sung, prayers made, Torah read and explained by learned guests especially on the day of Sabbath. A man with unclean spirit is present in this sacred place on a sacred day where the unholy meets the Holy.
Person: Jesus, the King of the universe who came down into the world, enters the synagogue and starts to teach with authority. Soon after the astonishing powerful teaching, the spirits in the demon possessed man cry out “Let us alone”. Contrarily they recognize the divine identity of Jesus saying “Jesus of Nazareth, The Holy One of God”. But Jesus, the healer of all sicknesses, rebukes and commands the unclean spirit to come out. They obey and leave the man instantly validating Jesus’ supremacy over evil powers- the man’s burdens taken away, being helped and completely healed, in a holy place on a holy day by the Most Holy God!
In this miracle, Jesus portrays His power and authority over the domain of darkness showing compassion in giving the man freedom and sanity, unlike other scribes and healers of His time, regardless the restrictions of Sabbath. He works in mysterious ways for our good and His glory. This helpless man was bound and tormented, but now freed by God’s mercy. Jesus is still sovereign and powerful to bring light into every area of darkness where devil holds onto, for all other names become powerless before the mighty name of Jesus.
He transforms our lives each day inviting us to be “Jesus possessed” and kingdom-minded, having Him as our Lord and master to live in complete freedom. As His children, let us submit to the authority of Jesus and may He rule our lives. This miracle also emphasizes us turning up to church is important no matter how inconvenient it may look like, you come and be encouraged in Spirit! But going to church/worship or keeping holy events alone will not make us Christian, unless you meet Jesus there! May we find Jesus in everything we do for He is our joy and strength, in Him be the glory! Amen!
