Article: What do I do now? | Jothi Selvakumar, Australia

On one fine day, an elderly gentleman named James was brought via ambulance to a hectic emergency department. James was covered in blood to the point he was unrecognised. His clothes were also drenched in blood to the point there was not a single blood free spot on his clothes. The ambulance officers commenced their initial treatment like resuscitating with intravenous fluids to keep his blood pressure stable, but they could not figure out where the bleeding was coming from.
James could not answer them either as he was losing his consciousness. James’ colour was going pale as he lost so much blood profusely out of his body. The Emergency Department team took over the care from the Ambulance officers and started working on him. James went paler and paler to the point he started looking white as the linen sheets he was lying on.

The doctors tried to do all that they could to improve his condition. Since he lost so much blood, they started transfusing the third unit of blood. But, James was showing no improvement. The emergency team did all that they could and were on the verge of giving up. One of the experienced clinicians spoke to James in a clear voice and explained what is about to happen to James. He said “James… it breaks my heart to say this, but you are about to pass away”. James, still in his semi-conscious state, asked the team “What do I do now”. This was a very
hard question which the team struggled to answer. A lovely Nurse, however, said to James to hold her hands and asked whether he was in any pain at all. Before he could answer that question, James breathed his last breath and passed away.

These last words which came out of James’s mouth touched a Christian Nurse who was at the scene. If a person who does not know Jesus asks her ‘What do I do now’, how could she respond to them?

Here she came up with wonderful truths:

1. Believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9-10).

2. Open the door of your heart as Jesus says in Revelation 3:20, Behold I stand at the door and
knock, if anyone hears my voice, I will come into him and sup with him and he with me.

3. Submit yourself to Him (James 4:7). Say you are sorry.

4. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9).

5. Hold on to God’s promises (Hebrews 10:23) and embrace them.

6. Follow Him (Matthew 16:24). Deny yourself, take up the cross and follow Him. He is the
model.

Jesus can answer your question, what do I do now?
