Story: The Deadly Jealousy | Joanna Mariam John

Peter was returning home, his mind full of thoughts about playing with his pet Max. Max was not an ordinary dog, he was white; furry ball of joy with deep soulful eyes that could melt anyone’s heart. But as Peter reached the gate, instead of the usual excited barking, Max was lying motion-less on the gate his snow white fur was stained with dirt and those once sparkling eyes were now closed forever. Peter fell to his knees, his world shattering he said “I fed him myself last night. He was totally fine?!” He screamed, hugging the lifeless puppy. He remembered seeing his best friend Andrew near max bowl last evening, Peter immediately rushed in to Andrew’s home. He asked Andrew, did you see anyone near Max yesterday? Andrew’s hand was trembling, “No… I just gave him some treats like I always do”. He stammered avoiding all eye contacts.

The guilt was becoming unbearable for Andrew. He broke down in tears infront of his mother Elizabeth. He confessed everything,” Mom I was so jealous! Peter used to spend all the time with that puppy, I felt ignored and invisible so I mixed poision in the treat. Elizabeth was horrified, she took Andrew to Peter’s house with tears in her eyes. She apologised to Peter on her son’s behalf.

Moral
